MOVIE REVIEW: Hard Candy
So I decided to add movie reviews to my blogging repertoire. In the Summer I watch movies quite frequently so reviewing them seemed like a pretty good idea. So for my first ever movie review I am reviewing HARD CANDY starring Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson. Now those who know me know that I love Juno, in which Ellen Page is the title character. I loved her performance so much in that movie that I decided to check out some of her other work. I chose Hard Candy becuase I actually remembered looking it up on IMDB after seeing the poster in video world when I was probably in sixth/seventh grade and the plot grabbed my attention. As you may know I went through a phase where I was obsessed with horror movies, but I focused more on the classics like The Shining and Misery. Thus I had a tendency to skip over modern horror films.
THE PLOT: 14 year hold Hayley frequently chats with 30-something photographer Jeff online. They decide to meet at a cafe, and then they proceed to Jeff's house. Sounds like a story we all have heard before but this has many twists making you second guess who the predator REALLY is in the story.
THE CONCLUSION: WHOA MY GOODNESS... This movie is SCARY. I don't know if Horror is the genre I would put this movie in, but I wouldn't have it in Drama(Where I found it in Blockbuster). It is a thriller to the highest degree. There was 1-2 scenes I had to fast forward through because they were just far too intense and, quite frankly, kinda gross. But this movie is really good in the twisted way a movie like Misery is good. The acting is astounding...There isn't much plot but the dialog and performances makes up for it. It's hard to review it without giving up the twists in the plot. I knew what was going to happen from other reviews and it still terrified me. I couldn't imagine watching it with no preconceived notions. The movie also hit kinda close to home with hayley only one year younger than I. With a generation so obsessed with online relations this reminds you how the internet can really be quite sary. Hard Candy comes highly recommended, but only if you're ready to second guess everything you believe about online predators. This movie, it's one wild ride.
